Hades Everything We Know So Far

Hades Lore

The game starts with how Zagreus gains his motivation to try and leave his home. As part of an elaborate prank, he asks Hypnos, the god of sleep, to put a spell on everyone in the House of Hades apart from himself. While they slumber, Zagreus sneaks into his father's chambers to see what mischief he can cause. Instead, he finds a letter from someone named Persephone. In a funny little fourth-wall-breaking dialogue with the narrator, he discovers that Persephone is his actual biological mother. Thus, Zagreus' main motivation for escaping the Underworld and getting to the world above is to find his mother, Persephone, the Goddess of Grain and Nature, and supposed Queen of the Underworld, and find out exactly why she had left him as an infant.

After clearing the game, Zagreus is able to find Persephone but is only able to speak to her for a short amount of time before he dies, so the player will have to successfully escape again to find out more about the story. Once the player completes escape attempts enough times, players will be able to piece together the whole narrative as to Zagreus' family's past and why she had left for the mortal world. As is common knowledge, Persophone is the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest and Agriculture. In this game's narrative, she was formerly known as Kore. In the past, she had apparently grown tired of all the bickering and conflicts that would keep arising from her family of Olympians. Zeus would take notice of this and, thinking it a favor of goodwill, forces her onto Hades in the Underworld, to live away from Olympus. He does this without anyone ever knowing, and so the others would just come to believe Persephone to be either dead or just away somewhere. While the two weren't excited about the new arrangement at first, they eventually fell in love and conceived Zagreus. Unfortunately, the Fates had declared that no heir would ever come out of Hades' lineage. Because of this, and the persistent fact that non-Cthonic entities are not meant to live in the Underworld, Zagreus was stillborn.

homepage6 hades wiki guide

This devastated Persephone and she chose to run away to the mortal world, with Nyx's help, where none of the immortals could reach her. Nyx would eventually make a deal with the Fates to have Zagreus be reborn in exchange for him being bound to the Underworld. She raises him as her own child, with Zagreus believing her to be her real mother. Hades decides to keep the whole thing a secret and forbids anyone in the Underworld to even speak Persephone's name to protect her from the Olympians' wrath should they find out that she has escaped her godly station twice over. However, Zagreus eventually learns the truth of his lineage, which motivates him to keep trying to escape the Underworld to look for his real mother and get some answers. Nyx would agree to help him and puts him in contact with his extended family on Olympus, as they help him in different ways. However, they're convinced that Zagreus wants to escape his home to join them in Olympus.

Eventually, Zagreus successfully convinces Persephone that he is in fact her son. However, Persephone is hesitant to return as she also fears what would happen to Hades and their household, should the Olympians find everything out. She also would not want to be forced back to Olympus once the Olympians knew that she was not dead. Her son eventually fully convinces her to return by showing her that Hades, principled and protective as he is, never stopped caring about her. They invite the Olympians over for a dinner party where they try and set the record straight. They claim that Hades and Persephone had eloped and gave birth to Zagreus in the Underworld. She cannot, however, come back to Olympus permanently, as she had eaten the fruit of the Underworld which now has her bound to her new home. With everything as it should be, the player can continue trying to clear the Underworld indefinitely as Zagreus agrees to become a tester for the Underworld security system which is meant to prevent souls from exiting the place whenever they want.

Hades Gameplay Mechanics

What are the Weapons in Hades

As Zagreus, you will have six different weapons to master, called the Infernal Arms. The Infernal Arms are supposedly the weapons that the Olympian Gods and Goddesses used to defeat the Titans of old and eventually suppress them in Tartarus. They then proceeded to seal them away once they were done with their large task.

homepage9 hades wiki guide

The Infernal Arms are all unlockable in exchange for Chtonic Keys which can be gained through various means as you journey through the Underworld. Each one will have a different style in terms of their basic attacks and their special attack. Most of them are melee weapons, with the exception of the bow and the railgun. The Infernal Arms can be improved and upgraded in a variety of different ways. Chief of these are the Aspects, which are permanently acquired optional boosts for the weapons and can even change the way you play them. Players will also be able to randomly find Daedalus Hammers during their runs which also upgrades their different attacks. Upgrades with Daedalus Hammers are not permanent and will reset after every run.

Each weapon also has a Hidden Aspect that drastically changes the nature of their move sets. Hidden Aspects are revealed in specific ways and embody characters from mythologies and legends outside of the Greek myths. The prerequisites to unlock them can have something to do with speaking to different NPCs or even gods/goddesses or upgrading Weapons in a specific way.

What are Keepsakes in Hades

Keepsakes are another way to give Zagreus persistent bonuses. They function essentially like accessories in usual RPG games, and you can only equip one of them at a time to Zagreus. Keepsakes can be acquired by giving a Nectar to an NPC. This includes the gods and goddesses. Nectar can be acquired like all other randomized items during your runs.

homepage10 hades wiki guide

Keepsakes are acquired after giving just a single Nectar to an NPC who has a Keepsake to give, so keep in mind that you don't really have to keep giving Nectar to an NPC. You might even be better off giving just one Nectar to every NPC until you collect all the Keepsakes in the game. You can give additional Nectar to NPCs whose affinity gauge you want to raise.

Hades What are Boons from Gods and Goddesses

As you go through the game, you'll have to make decisions with regard to the rewards you'll get after clearing a room of all its Enemies or Bosses. Often times you can get a Boon as your reward. Boons are improvements you can get that can give you passive boosts, improve your attacks, enchant them with certain elements, and even change your entire build drastically.

homepage11 hades wiki guide

Boons are given by the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The nature of Boons and the different bonuses they grant will be in line with what god or goddess is granting them. Whenever it's possible to choose a Boon as your reward for clearing a room, you'll be able to see which deity of the pantheon will grant your reward based on the symbol in the orb. Boons are temporary and will disappear after every run.

Hades What is the Mirror of Night

The Mirror of Night is a large mirror that Zagreus uses to reflect on his adventures whenever he dies and gets sent back to the House of Hades. Players are able to find this mirror in Zagreus' room. The Mirror of Night is a feature that allows players to unlock different passive boosts for Zagreus that will help him on his next run.

homepage12 hades wiki guide

The passive bonuses that the Mirror of the Night offers are all permanent, making them some of the most valuable upgrades you can get for Zagreus. This means that these boosts will persist in every run. These bonuses range from increasing back attack damage, giving you extra dashes after just using one, to even healing after clearing a room, or giving you a second wind when you die. These two latter boosts, Chtonic Vitality and Death Defiance, are two of the most important ones to unlock. These bonuses are acquired in exchange for specific amounts of Darkness, making collecting Darkness from your runs a priority.
