Boons in Hades are different power-ups that Zagreus can obtain after completing certain rooms. Each Boon is related to a different deity, and offers different benefits akin to said deity's personality and powers. Zagreus can equip 1 Boon to his Attack, Special, Dash, and Call abilities slots which can enhance their mechanics or even drastically change how they work. If he already has a slot occupied by a Boon and decides to add another one, then the second replaces the first. It is important to note that Boons are not persistent across runs and are LOST upon death, and once a new run starts, Zagreus WILL NOT possess any Boons equipped.

What are Boons in Hades
Boons are powerful, temporary abilities that are granted to Zagreus by his relatives, the Olympian gods and goddesses. In-game, it's basically a roundabout way for the Olympians to help Zagreus without catching too much ire from Hades, Zagreus' father, for encroaching on his family affairs. These temporary abilities improve various aspects of Zagreus' combat abilities, like his Attacks and Dashes.
Each god or goddess will offer a unique set of Boons that will reflect their unique personality and their various domains and specialties. After every run, Boons are taken away and Zagreus will have to start from scratch again with his basic abilities. Boons can then be upgraded to higher levels, making their effects more potent, by acquiring either a Pom of Power, or a Pom Slice during your run.
How to Get Boons in Hades
Boons are given either as rewards for clearing rooms or as an item to be bought at Charon's Shop. As with all the rewards for clearing any of the rooms, Boons appear as rewards at random, and there's no guarantee as to which Boon from which god or goddesses get presented to you as options after clearing the room. Charon's Shop is also randomized, so there's no guarantee as to whether or not any Boon will appear there, and from which god or goddess. For this game, you'll be able to pick the rewards for the next room that you'll clear. You'll be able to see which god or goddess you'll get and their general effects based on the following symbols:
- Aphrodite - inflict Weak and Charmed on Enemies, mitigate damage, and increase your health.
- Ares - inflict Doom, special areas that deal damage called Blade Rifts, and increase your damage
- Artemis - make your Cast stronger, and improve critical hit rates and mechanics
- Athena - Deflect projectiles and defensive strategies, and make Calls more potent
- Demeter - slow Enemies with Chill effects, have more debuffs and healing
- Dionysus - inflict Hangover which inflicts even more damage in Festive Bogs
- Hermes - improves movement speed and overall mobility with dashes, and evasion chance
- Poseidon - knock Enemies back for crowd control and increase room rewards
- Zeus - add lightning qualities to your combat abilities and cause extra damage from lightning strikes
How Do Boons Work in Hades
Hades Boon Rarities
There are a total of 4 different rarities of Boons in Hades. The rarer the Boon, Common being the least powerful and Heroic being the best. As mentioned, the rarities of the Boons that will appear during your run are randomized. However, certain effects will increase the chances for higher rarities. Aside from this, there are other Special Boons that requires certain steps to make them appear for you at all. The following are the colors that correspond with each rarity of the Boons.
- Common which are denoted in White.
- Rare which are denoted in Blue.
- Epic which are denoted in Purple.
- Heroic which are denoted in Red.
Equipping Boons in Hades
Zagreus has five main combat capabilities: Attack, Special, Cast, Call, and Dash. Boons that you will encounter during your runs can be applied to one of each of these combat mechanics. For example, you might come across a Boon that will empower Zagreus' Dash to inflict damage to nearby Enemies depending on which god or goddess that Boon comes from.
You can only apply one Boon to each combat capability. If you try to apply a newer Boon to one of them while already having one equipped to that combat capability, you will have to let go of the previously-acquired Boon.
Some Boons also grant passive bonuses to Zagreus that deal with various other mechanics in the game. For example, Boons could grant extra effects for dispatching Enemies, or for taking damage. While sometimes not as valuable as Boons that augment Zagreus' combat capabilities, passive Boons still add a deeper layer of customization for the game, and they do not subscribe to the same one-per-slot limitations as combat capability Boons.
Special Boons in Hades
As mentioned previously, there are Special Boons that you can come across as you encounter specific circumstances during your run. These Boons can have special conditions to activate. The following are the Special Boons that can be encountered and acquired during one of your escape attempts:
- Duo Boons: These are Boons that synergize the unique aspects of two of the deities of the Olympian pantheon. They can only be offered by the game if you have a Boon equipped from each of those two deities.
- Legendary Boons: These are the ultimate Boons that represent the pinnacle of the god or goddess' quirks, power, and personality. Each Olympian deity has only one, aside from Poseidon and Hermes. For them to appear during your run, Zagreus has to already have certain specific Boons equipped from the corresponding god or goddess.
- Chaos Boons: These are powerful Boons granted by the Primordial Chaos within his domain which you can enter via Chaos Gates, randomly found during your runs. Usually, they will come with a curse which you'll have to first endure and clear rooms with before the actual Boon is granted to Zagreus. These Boons are usually passive bonuses that can stack.
- Bouldy Boons: These are a special type of Boons that mainly grant Zagreus additional passive stats, these may include damage reduction, damage dealt to Enemies, and even movement speed bonuses. To acquire them, players have to build up their relationship with Sisyphus, until they are allowed to speak to his boulder, Bouldy, and then give it some Nectar.
