Sisyphus is an NPC in Hades. Sisyphus is a former king who faces eternal punishment in Tartarus for his attempts to deceive death, which he managed twice, albeit briefly, before facing the consequences. His punishment involves ceaselessly pushing a boulder up a steep hill, only to watch it roll back down each time he nears the summit, despite his persistent efforts. Throughout his perpetual torment, the Furies, particularly Megaera, taunt him. Despite this ordeal, Sisyphus maintains a good-natured and polite demeanor, having ample time to contemplate his past actions. He even personifies his boulder as "Bouldy," treating it as a companion and sharing casual conversations with Zagreus.
Within the depths of Tartarus reside the most wretched of all the shades who linger for eternity within the Underworld, whose Lord and Master is especially unkind to those attempting to cheat death.
Where to Find Sisyphus in Hades
Sisyphus can be encountered in Tartarus when he occasionally pauses from his eternal task of pushing his boulder. During these encounters, he presents Zagreus with a choice between Health, 50-55 Darkness, or 100 Obols. Each escape attempt allows for only one interaction with Sisyphus. While he cannot be harmed, Sisyphus will react if Zagreus attempts to attack him or his boulder, Bouldy.
About Sisyphus in Hades
Sisyphus remains quite perceptive and often engages in gossip about various underworld matters despite being subject to the routine lashes of the Furies. Despite his solitary existence, he maintains a friendly demeanor, even towards the Furies, finding solace in his companionship with his boulder, affectionately named "Bouldy". Once a tyrant king characterized by manipulation and selfishness, Sisyphus was intolerable and lacked humility, believing himself wiser than the gods. However, his endless punishment led to deep introspection, transforming him into a more decent person over time, despite his ongoing attempts to escape. Sisyphus's persistence surpasses even Zagreus's, and his insights and advice prove invaluable in Zagreus's attempts to break free. Having meticulously memorized the entire map of Hades through his repeated attempts, Sisyphus serves as an essential guide for Zagreus.
